What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a technology that allows you to connect your cell phone, computer, keyboard, mouse and PDA etc... to other Bluetooth enabled devices by radio instead of cables.
You can synchronise information between devices and there no messy cables to worry about.
Simply place the devices close to each other, pair them together and then share information, make a call etc…
As the technology uses radio, the devices do not have to be in the “line of sight” unlike infra-red. Devices just have to be in the range of each other – around 20 feet.
How it works
When a Bluetooth device detects another one nearby it automatically links up to it. There is no configuration or cables to deal with.
Bluetooth devices work by using radio chips and send data at around 1Mb per second which compares to the much faster range of 10Mbps and 54 Mbps that proper wireless networks have.
Is it secure?
Bluetooth uses the 2.45 GHz radio band which microwave ovens and cordless phones also use.
Bluetooth devices stay secure by constantly changing the radio frequency they are using to help prevent eavesdropping.
Every Bluetooth device has an individual ID and before they can swap data, you have to enter a PIN number to authorise the connection. This is to prevent other users that are nearby hooking up to your device. But once you have set up the connection, your devices can remember them which can be a security risk.
